6/12/2023 0 Comments Princess Academy by Shannon Hale![]() ![]() Miri deeply wants to be at the top of the class, but she's also conflicted because of her feelings for a boy back in the village. ![]() Most of the story follows Miri and the other village girls as they deal with a harsh, cold head mistress of the academy, and the competition between them to be the head of the class (which earns you the best dress at the princess ball, plus some other perks). The king's ministers, appalled that their prince needs to marry a rough and unsophisticated village girl, set up an academy, a day's hike down the mountain from the village, and force all the marriageable teenage girls in the village to go live there and be intensely tutored for a year, at which point the prince will arrive in great pomp, there will be a formal dance, and he'll choose his bride. One day the simple life ends: the priests of their country have mystically divined that the prince is to marry a girl from their village. It's a sometimes harsh life, with everyone kind of scraping to get by, but filled with love and close friendships. Miri is a teenage girl living in a small, simple mountain village, where everyone makes a living quarrying a lovely marble rock that is found only on their mountain. The Princess Academy is a favorite comfort read, and a delightful older middle grade/younger YA fantasy, nominated for the 2006 Newbery Award. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments The last season blehm![]() ![]() ![]() The Last Season tells the inspiring, poignant story of Morgenson, who, over the course of twenty-eight summers living alone in this craggy wilderness, became a celebrated ranger in the National Park Service's most adventurous unit. But these mountains are as perilous as they are beautiful: here is where the Donner Party was trapped and where scores of unlucky hikers must be rescued every year. The granite spires of the High Sierra have historically been a refuge of inspiration and adventure for the likes of John Muir and Ansel Adams, as well as for the pioneering rock climbers of the 1960s. In the spirit of Jon Krakauer's bestselling Into the Wild, Eric Blehm's The Last Season examines the extraordinary life of legendary backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson and his mysterious disappearance in California's unforgiving Sierra Nevada. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments Not so big house by sarah susanka![]() ![]() Get Your House Right: Architectural Elements to Use & Avoid Ross Chapin introduces an antidote to faceless, placeless sprawl-small scale neighborhoods where people can easily know one another, where empty-nesters and single householders can find friendship or a helping hand nearby, and where children can have shirt-tail aunties and uncles just beyond their front gate. For this purpose, not only did I use Aboriginal novels, but also I used political speeches, articles and reviews, most of which have been written in the last few years. It is still present in Australia, and we will see to what extent it influenced the literary production of Aborigines, who felt the need of handing down their past for the reasons I will analyze below. Aboriginal culture has not disappeared after colonization even though it lost an important part, it found a new mode of communication in the passage from the oral to the written tradition. Nowadays, we can speak about post-colonialism: we have a post-colonial literature in English. ![]() The legacy of colonialism is a current and controversial issue, but everyone would agree that it changed the history of Australia forever. ![]() In the first part of my dissertation, I found it necessary to introduce Aboriginal culture and history, in order to inform the reader about the past and the present of this fascinating island, especially in relation to the British colonization. ![]() The focus of my thesis is the Australian Aboriginal literature, particularly the novel Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Brambleholme Summer by Duncan Hall![]() ![]() ![]() See Literary Pages / Guides and Indices.Ī review of Swallowdale from The Guardian (May 2004), submitted by Bill Dashfield, was added to the Literary Pages index of reviews.Ī review of Tessa Duder's Night Race to Kuwau by Bill Dashfield was added to the Ransome Readers Recommend Section.
